Soft, pillowy snickerdoodle cookies with a hint of eggnog and a crackled cinnamon-nutmeg sugar top. An easy, kid-approved holiday recipe that comes together in about 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups (330g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup (80ml) eggnog (full-fat recommended)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and 1½ cups granulated sugar on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggnog, egg, and vanilla extract; beat on low until just combined (mixture may look curdled).
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing on low until just combined. Dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
  6. In a small bowl, mix coating ingredients: ¼ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon nutmeg.
  7. Portion dough into 1.5-tablespoon balls (about 30g each). Roll into smooth balls.
  8. Roll each dough ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat completely.
  9. Place coated balls on prepared baking sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.
  10. Bake for 9-11 minutes, until edges are set and centers look slightly underdone.
  11. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, use full-fat eggnog and room temperature ingredients. Do not overbake; cookies should look slightly underdone in the center when removed from the oven. Dough can be chilled for 15 minutes if too sticky. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze baked cookies for up to 3 months.
