This balanced fire cider recipe combines apple cider vinegar, horseradish, garlic, ginger, and a touch of honey for a potent immune-supporting tonic that’s surprisingly drinkable.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups raw apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
  • 1/2 cup fresh horseradish root, peeled and coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh ginger root, unpeeled and sliced into thin coins
  • 1/4 cup fresh turmeric root, unpeeled and sliced
  • 8 to 10 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 1 medium yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 medium jalapeño pepper, sliced into rings
  • 1/2 habanero pepper, seeds removed and thinly sliced
  • Peel from 1 organic orange
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 1/4 cup raw honey (or more to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep all your ingredients first. Wash and scrub all produce. Peel horseradish and chop into 1/2-inch pieces. Slice ginger and turmeric into thin coins. Smash garlic cloves. Roughly chop onion. Slice jalapeño into rings. Remove seeds from habanero and slice thinly. Use a vegetable peeler to strip orange peel into wide strips. Rinse rosemary.
  2. Layer the ingredients in a quart-sized glass jar. Start with horseradish, ginger, turmeric, and garlic at the bottom. Add onion, jalapeño, habanero, orange peel, and rosemary on top. Sprinkle in black peppercorns and cayenne if using. Do not pack too tightly.
  3. Pour apple cider vinegar over the ingredients, ensuring everything is completely submerged. Use a wooden spoon or chopstick to release air bubbles.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds.
  5. Label and date the jar with masking tape and a permanent marker.
  6. Store in a cool, dark place for 3 to 4 weeks. Shake gently every few days. Start tasting after two weeks.
  7. After 3 to 4 weeks, strain the fire cider through cheesecloth or a fine-mesh strainer into a large bowl or measuring cup. Squeeze out all liquid.
  8. Add 1/4 cup raw honey and stir until dissolved. Taste and add more honey if desired.
  9. Bottle the finished fire cider into clean glass bottles or jars using a funnel. Store in the refrigerator.

Notes

Don’t overdo the hot peppers—heat intensifies as it steeps. Use raw apple cider vinegar with the mother. Keep all ingredients submerged to prevent mold. Label and date the jar. Patience is key; flavors develop over 3-4 weeks.
