A hearty and comforting crockpot turkey chili with sweet potatoes, beans, and a smoky-spiced broth. Perfect for fall evenings, this set-it-and-forget-it meal is naturally sweet, savory, and packed with fiber and lean protein.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional, for heat)
  • 1.5 lbs lean ground turkey (93/7)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes (about 4 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 (15-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for serving)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for serving)
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt (for serving)
  • Diced avocado (for serving)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and jalapeño (if using) and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Add the ground turkey to the skillet. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until it’s no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Transfer the cooked turkey and onions to a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the diced sweet potatoes, red bell pepper, fire-roasted tomatoes (with their juices), tomato sauce, drained kidney beans, drained black beans, and chicken broth.
  4. Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne (if using) over the top. Add the tomato paste. Stir everything together until well combined.
  5. Cover the crockpot and cook on LOW for 6-7 hours or on HIGH for 3-4 hours, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  6. Once cooked, stir the chili. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot with desired toppings.

Notes

For deeper flavor, let the chili sit on ‘warm’ for 30 minutes after cooking. This chili tastes even better the next day. To thicken, mash some sweet potatoes and beans against the side of the crockpot. For a vegetarian version, omit turkey and double the beans.
