This green bean casserole is a budget-friendly, quick, and easy side dish that the whole family will love. It uses simple pantry ingredients and a few clever techniques to deliver a creamy, crunchy, and delicious casserole every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (14.5 oz each) cut green beans, drained
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions, divided
  • Optional: 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Drain the green beans really well in a colander, shaking gently to remove excess liquid.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Stir until smooth.
  4. Add the drained green beans and 1/2 cup of the crispy fried onions to the bowl. Stir gently until the beans are evenly coated. If using cheese, add it now.
  5. Pour the mixture into a 1 1/2-quart baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of crispy fried onions over the top.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until bubbly around the edges and the topping is golden brown.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Drain the green beans thoroughly to avoid a watery casserole. For extra crispy topping, toast the fried onions on a baking sheet for 3-4 minutes before adding. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.
