A fun and festive Halloween appetizer that combines classic guacamole with a playful Frankenstein face made from black olives and tortilla chips. Ready in just 10 minutes, it’s a crowd-pleaser that looks impressive without requiring any culinary skills.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 small Roma tomato, diced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup black olives, sliced
  • 1 large tortilla chip
  • 2 small tortilla chips or pretzel sticks
  • Optional: a few cilantro leaves for hair

Instructions

  1. Prep your avocados: Cut each avocado in half lengthwise, twist to separate, and remove the pit. Score the flesh in a grid pattern with a knife, then scoop it out with a spoon into your mixing bowl.
  2. Mash the avocados: Use a fork or potato masher to mash the avocado to your desired consistency (mostly smooth with a few small chunks).
  3. Add the lime juice: Squeeze the lime juice over the mashed avocado and stir immediately to prevent browning.
  4. Mix in the aromatics: Add the diced onion, chopped cilantro, minced jalapeño (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  5. Fold in the tomato (optional): Gently fold in the diced tomato at the end so it doesn’t get mushy.
  6. Shape the guac into a face: Transfer the guacamole to your serving platter. Use a spoon to shape it into a rough oval or rectangle about 1-inch thick. Smooth the top and edges.
  7. Create the Frankenstein face: Place two olive slices near the top for eyes. Break a tortilla chip in half and arrange the pieces to form a jagged, stitched-looking mouth. Place two olive slices on the sides of the neck area for bolts. Add two small tortilla chips or pretzel sticks on either side for ears. Tuck a few cilantro leaves at the top for hair (optional).
  8. Serve immediately with extra tortilla chips around the edges.

Notes

For best results, use ripe but not overripe avocados. Assemble the face just before serving to prevent chips and olives from getting soggy. If making ahead, prepare the guacamole and store in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed against the surface for up to 4 hours. The guacamole can be refrigerated for up to 2 days.
